  • CIB Symposium on Resilience to Climate Change and Flooding at the University of Huddersfield

In association with the Global Disaster Resilience Centre (GDRC) and the CIB, the School of Art, Design and Architecture at the University of Huddersfield organised a one-day symposium on climate change and flooding on the 6th of April 2017, at the Sir George Buckley Theatre, University of Huddersfield.

We invited a team of academics, practitioners, local authority representatives and consultants in the field to showcase some of the local initiatives on flood resilience, community actions on climate change and natural flood management schemes amidst some of the similar initiatives worldwide. Altogether 35 guests attended the event. The event started with welcome messages from Prof. Bingunath IngirigeProf. Dilanthi Amaratunga, Director of the GDRC and Ms Helena Soimakallio, the President of the CIB.

  • 'Long-term Sustainability of Post-Disaster Re-construction Projects' research initiative launched in Sri Lanka

The project “Long-term sustainability of the post-disaster housing re-construction projects” is a collaboration between Aston University (PI: Dr Gayan Wedawatta), University of Huddersfield (CoI: Prof Bingu Ingirige) and the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) Sri Lanka (Mr Kishan Sugathapala and a research team from NBRO). The project was launched in Sri Lanka on 16th August 2016. Chief Guest of the event was Mr S.S Miyanawala, Secretary to the Ministry of Disaster Management in Sri Lanka. Prof Bingu conducted the key-note speech at the event.   

The project is funded by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Bowen Jenkins Fund. The project seeks to investigate the long-term performance of post-disaster housing reconstruction projects and make recommendations for effective, sustainable housing re-construction following natural disasters.

  • Participation in the Conference titled “Challenges in flood risk management in Urban areas of River Deltas”, Bangkok, Thailand, 6th November 2013.

    Dr. Bingu Ingirige was invited by the Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre (ADPC) in Bangkok in Collaboration with Wilton Park in the UK to contribute as a resource person in the above conference. He addressed the session titled “Risk financing options for reducing the flood risk in river delta areas”.

  • Dr. Bingu Ingirige, addresses the European Forum for Urban Security (EFUS) 2012 conference in Brussels.

    Dr. Bingu Ingirige, a member of the centre recently addressed the European Forum for Urban Security (EFUS) conference held in Brussels on the 13th and 14th of December 2012. He addressed the Urban Risk Management session organised in conjunction with the United Nations office of Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR).

  • Addressing the ESRC seminar titled “Governance of Resilience”, September 2012 at University of Sheffield

    Dr. Bingu Ingirige from the Centre for Disaster Resilience at Salford University addressed the ESRC sponsored seminar titled “Governance of Resilience” at University of Sheffield. This event was organised by the Business School of University of Sheffield.
